Unusual Red Lightning Captured in Skies
A team of photographers operating in New Zealand have managed to photograph images of “red sprites”, among the most elusive atmospheric displays globally, during which glowing scarlet illuminations become visible in the atmosphere.
A Remarkable Night of Discovery
The imaging specialists initially planned to capture the galactic core over the unique geological structures in the southern region of the country on 11 October, before encountering the extraordinary event.
They thought they would be blessed to get good weather that after-dark period, but their shooting session became “a truly memorable experience,” an individual involved commented.
“He was checking his photographs for a Milky Way panorama and realized he had photographed scarlet atmospheric flashes,” he noted. “The discovery was astounding – there was a whole bunch of excited exclamations and various reactions in the dark.”
Explaining Red Sprites
Red sprites are electrical discharges in the higher atmospheric layers, produced by electrical storms. In contrast to traditional lightning that aims at the surface, these events propel upward towards the higher altitudes, producing structures that are similar to vertical forms, root vegetables or even marine creatures. The first photograph of a red sprite was captured – accidentally – in the late eighties, by a team at the a academic organization.
Fleeting and Ethereal Sightings
These events are extremely short-lived – lasting just a millisecond – that they are rarely visible to the human sight, but an individual got lucky. “I happened to be looking straight toward a sprite when it took place – just a perfect coincidence viewing the correct area of the heavens and I witnessed a short crimson illumination,” he commented.
Witnessing the occurrences was a dream for this individual, an honored dark sky artist. “It appears as if you witness something that is not real, it appears mystical … the color is a profound crimson that is present only momentarily, so it is fascinating to observe.”
Skill-Based and Creative Mastery
Recording a such an event demands a expertise in technical photography, as well as an understanding of science and artistic vision, the individual explained. “It is a deeply engaging form of imaging that’s very rewarding as well.”
A different team member said it was counted as the “most extraordinary nights” of his existence. “I was able to observe the galactic band illuminating above the distant edge while these giant scarlet filaments of light moved above a thunderstorm at a great distance,” he described.
A Unique Photographic Achievement
To his knowledge, there are no further recordings depicting crimson flashes and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in the same photograph.
“It was one of those moments when you know you are seeing an event you’ll probably never see again.”
