This Film Critique – Sleazy Cannibal Horror Preys On Wealthy Youths on a Vessel Trip to Slaughter
Some horror films explore profound dreads, and other entries use the genre to highlight cultural issues. Then there are those that aim purely to entertain or generate amusement. Then comes silly, cruel garbage exemplified here: a micro-budget copy of man-eating murderer series The Hills Have Eyes, its weak continuations and comparable titles.
Notably, it stars a cast member from the original original Hills production: Susan Lanier takes on the role of a character, a coarse barmaid who enjoys human flesh. Yet that franchise at the very least develop a certain origin tale to explain the violence; The protagonist and her skeezy companions’ appetites are simply assumed, as though encountering flesh-eaters is simply one potential danger of the boating life, like sharks or engine troubles.
The Victims for this Slaughter
The victims to this slaughter are a quintet of largely stupid individuals in their 20s, who get together for a good time on the vessel of rich boy Chad (an actor). Among them are the host’s always bikini-clad partner Dana (this performer), male friend a character (the actor), and a duo one character (the actress) and another (Caitlin Rose).
Quantities of stimulants are used, gallons of drinks imbibed and romantic encounters embarked on as precursors for this production’s real idea of entertainment: subjecting the characters in the hands of the marked dock body-eaters, who lead them to the shore after the boat runs out of gas on the water.
An Empty Exercise
Ultimately, this fails to be anywhere near graphic as the Hills films during their most intense moments, yet there is a quality considerably more dispiriting about the movie’s meaninglessness, its failure to display cleverness, understanding, or fundamental directorial skill. The performances reaches such a exquisitely balanced degree of poor quality that it is impossible to watch.
