Students Voice Worries That Artificial Intelligence Is Weakening Their Academic Abilities, Study Shows
According to new research, students are sharing concerns that employing AI is weakening their capacity to learn. Many complain it renders schoolwork “effortless”, while some argue it hinders their creativity and impedes them from acquiring fresh abilities.
Widespread Utilization of Artificial Intelligence By Students
An analysis examining the usage of AI in British educational institutions found that just 2% of pupils aged 13 and 18 said they did not use artificial intelligence for their academic tasks, while the vast majority said they consistently employed it.
Negative Impact on Competencies
Despite AI’s widespread use, 62% of the learners stated it has had a negative effect on their abilities and growth at school. 25% of the respondents agreed that artificial intelligence “facilitates accessing solutions without independent work”.
A further 12% said artificial intelligence “restricts my imaginative processes”, while similar numbers stated they were less inclined to tackle challenges or compose originally.
Advanced Understanding Among Young People
A specialist in machine learning commented that the research was among the first to look at how youth in the Britain were incorporating AI into their academic pursuits.
“What strikes me as remarkable is the depth of the responses,” the specialist said. “For 60% of students to say they are concerned that AI tools encourage copying rather than doing original work, that’s a very deep understanding of what your schoolwork is meant to help you do, and what the pitfalls and benefits are associated with this technology.”
The expert further stated: “Students employing this tool exhibit a remarkably advanced and mature perception of its role in their academics, a fact that is often overlooked when considering their autonomous use of technology in learning environments.”
Scientific Analyses and Broader Worries
The findings align with scientific analyses on the use of artificial intelligence in academics. A particular study measured brain electrical activity while essay writing among students using AI models and concluded: “These results raise concerns about the long-term educational implications of LLM reliance and underscore the need for deeper inquiry into AI’s role in learning.”
Nearly half of the 2,000 pupils surveyed reported they were concerned their peers were “secretly using AI” for academic work without their teachers being able to detect it.
Call for Guidance and Constructive Components
Many respondents stated that they desired more help from educators for the correct usage of AI and in evaluating whether its responses was trustworthy. A project aimed at assisting instructors with AI education is being introduced.
“Several discoveries are likely to captivate teachers, particularly the high level of guidance pupils anticipate from them. Despite perceptions of a digital generation gap, youth still turn to educators for effective technology integration strategies, a very optimistic observation.” the specialist said.
A school leader noted: “The results mirror my daily observations in the classroom. Numerous students acknowledge AI’s benefits for innovation, review, and addressing challenges, yet frequently employ it as a time-saver instead of an educational aid.”
Merely 31% said they didn’t think employing artificial intelligence had a negative impact on any of their abilities. Yet, the bulk of students reported using artificial intelligence aided them develop new skills, for instance 18% who said it aided them comprehend problems, and 15% who stated it aided them generate “original and superior” concepts.

Upon further inquiry, a 15-year-old girl commented: “My comprehension of mathematics has improved, and AI assists me in tackling complex problems.”
In addition, a male student aged 14 said: “My cognitive speed has increased compared to before.”
