CDU leader Friedrich Merz Confronts Accusations Over ‘Dangerous’ Migration Discourse

Opponents have charged the German chancellor, Friedrich Merz, of using what they call “harmful” language regarding immigration, following he called for “very large scale” removals of people from urban areas – and asserted that anyone with daughters would endorse his viewpoint.

Unapologetic Position

Merz, who assumed power in May promising to combat the rise of the extremist AfD party, recently chastised a correspondent who asked whether he wished to revise his strict remarks on migration from the previous week due to broad disapproval, or apologise for them.

“It is unclear if you have children, and female children among them,” Merz said to the reporter. “Ask your daughters, I suspect you’ll get a pretty loud and clear answer. There is nothing to take back; to the contrary I stress: we must change something.”

Opposition Backlash

Progressive critics alleged that Merz of borrowing tactics from far-right organizations, whose allegations that female individuals are being targeted by immigrants with sexual violence has become a international right-wing mantra.

Ricarda Lang, criticized the chancellor of delivering a dismissive message for female youth that ignored their actual policy priorities.

“Maybe ‘the daughters’ are also displeased with the chancellor showing concern about their freedoms and protection when he can employ them to justify his completely backward-looking approaches?” she stated on the platform X.

Protection Priority

Friedrich Merz said his main focus was “safety in public space” and highlighted that provided that it could be assured “will the mainstream political parties restore trust”.

He received backlash recently for statements that commentators alleged suggested that variety itself was a challenge in the nation’s metropolitan areas: “Certainly we still have this problem in the city environment, and which is why the interior minister is now striving to facilitate and carry out removals on a very large scale,” stated during a trip to Brandenburg state outside Berlin.

Discrimination Allegations

Clemens Rostock charged the chancellor of fueling ethnic bias with his remark, which drew small rallies in several cities across Germany during the weekend.

“It’s dangerous when incumbent parties try to portray individuals as a difficulty due to their appearance or background,” remarked.

SPD politician Natalie Pawlik of the SPD, government allies in the ruling coalition, said: “Immigration must not be branded with simplistic or populist kneejerk reactions – such approaches split the community to a greater extent and ultimately benefits the incorrect individuals rather than encouraging resolutions.”

Party Dynamics

The conservative leader’s party coalition recorded a disappointing 28.5 percent performance in the recent federal election versus the anti-immigration, anti-Muslim AfD with its unprecedented 20.8 percent.

Since then, the extremist party has caught up with the CDU/CSU, surpassing them in some polls, in the context of voter fears around immigration, crime and economic stagnation.

Previous Positions

The chancellor rose to the top of his organization vowing a stricter approach on migration than former chancellor the former head of government, dismissing her “wir schaffen das” slogan from the refugee influx a decade ago and attributing to her some responsibility for the AfD’s strength.

He has fostered an sometimes increasingly popularist rhetoric than his predecessor, notoriously attributing fault to “small pashas” for frequent property damage on New Year’s Eve and migrants for taking oral health consultations at the expense of local residents.

Party Planning

Merz’s party gathered on the weekend to develop a plan ahead of several local polls during the upcoming year. The AfD has substantial margins in two eastern regions, flirting with a historic 40 percent approval.

The chancellor maintained that his party was in agreement in barring cooperation in administration with the Alternative für Deutschland, a policy widely known as the “protection”.

Internal Dissent

However, the latest survey results has concerned some CDU members, leading a small number of party officials and consultants to indicate in the past few weeks that the policy could be unsustainable and harmful in the long term.

Those disagreeing argue that provided that the 12-year-old AfD, which national intelligence agencies have labelled as radical, is able to comment without accountability without having to make the difficult decisions administration necessitates, it will gain from the ruling party challenge affecting many developed countries.

Study Results

Academics in the nation recently found that mainstream parties such as the Christian Democrats were increasingly allowing the right-wing to establish the discourse, unwittingly validating their ideas and circulating them to a greater extent.

Although the chancellor declined using the word “protection” on this week, he insisted there were “basic distinctions” with the Alternative für Deutschland which would make cooperation unworkable.

“We accept this obstacle,” he declared. “We will now further show explicitly and very explicit what the AfD stands for. We will distance ourselves very clearly and directly from them. {Above all
