Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Irish Team While Joe McCarthy Omitted

Rugby squad announcement update

Returning head coach Andy Farrell has selected captain Doris in his Ireland team for the fall internationals, however lock McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in early May, recently returned to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Northern province forward Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash are also absent because of fitness concerns, while full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the summer tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new player in the 34-man group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Bolton will head to the US as "cover".

After playing the All Blacks at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous meeting, Ireland host Japan, the Wallabies and world champions South Africa in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said Farrell, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a mostly familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will once again compete for the first-choice fly-half spot. The fly-half role is remains available, as Prendergast and Crowley set to face off for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half selected with Farrell opting against selecting the province's Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and McCloskey form an experienced group of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at number 15.

Wingers Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the victories over Georgia and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the only new name in the Irish pack. The front rower has started a couple of Leinster's URC league matches so far and played in Ireland A's defeat by England in the English city earlier this year.

McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a international appearance.

Munster second row Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while experienced Northern province lock Henderson returns after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who started each of the Lions matches during the tour, is poised to cover for Doris if the captain does not regain fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will meet in the capital on the start of the week before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
